If you’re remodeling your house this summer, you might find yourself in need of a demolition contractor. Since you probably don’t hire demolition contractors on a regular basis, you might feel a little overwhelmed by the dozens of options available.

To narrow down your options, check each demolition company’s rating on Angie’s List and with the BBB. Don’t settle for any company that has less than an A rating with both of these companies.

Once you’re narrowed down your list to just a few companies, you’ll need to interview them to make sure they’re the right fit for your job. Demolition companies vary in terms of prices, expertise and specialties. To find out what each company has to offer, we recommend you ask the following questions:

What are your specialties?

Does the company specialize in selective demolition, the type you would need for a home remodeling job, or full-scale demolition, the type where entire buildings are brought down?

How long have you been in business?

When you’re allowing someone to demolish certain areas of your house, you won’t want someone who has only been in business six months. Look for a company with a few years of experience. If you’re unsure about a company, ask them how many home renovation jobs they have handled.

Are you insured?

Never, ever hire a demolition contractor who isn’t insured. This is just trouble waiting to happen. If an uninsured contractor damages your home, you’ll be financially responsible for the damage. Of course, you could sue them to recoup the costs, but who wants to deal with that mess?

What’s the estimated cost for this job?

Make sure to ask for an estimation of the cost of the job while shopping around for demolition contractors. Prices can vary wildly, but if you find a company with a price that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don’t fall for the old bait and switch.

By looking at reviews and asking these questions, you’ll be able to find a professional demolition company with the expertise for your job and the price to fit your budget.
