Austin Junk Hauling: Declutter Before Going to College

Posted: August 21, 2013 in Uncategorized

dormroomclutterIt’s back to school season! That means thousands of parents will be moving their kids into dorms this week! Notoriously tiny dorms. Looks like it’s time to declutter!

Before you move your child, encourage them to get rid of all their old clothes and shoes.  If they haven’t worn an item in the last year, encourage them to donate it.

Encourage your child to only bring the absolute necessities to school and to downsize whenever possible. For example, instead of bringing tons of photo albums and picture frames encourage your child to bring an electronic frame or instead of bringing tons of books, your child can bring an e-reader.

Invest in storage units for the dorm to increase the amount of room you’ll have. Hang a clear plastic shoe hanger over the door and use it to hold hair ties, makeup, face wash, and other small things.  Hang a sweater organizer in the closet and use double hangers to add even more space. Keep jewelry organized with a hanging jewelry holder and store extra clothing under the bed.
