Ever heard the saying one man’s trash is another man’s treasure? Turns out, America’s trash may just be China’s treasure!

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, China accounts for 43.1% of the global demand for copper. Since copper is a limited resource, the country has turned to other countries, namely the United States, to replenish its supply.

Demand for copper in the United States is low, resulting in low scrap metal prices. For this reason, thousands of pounds of copper that could be recycled end up in American landfills each year.

Enter China…

Chinese scrap metal companies have begun sending representatives to America. These representatives have one job – to bring back save thousands upon thousands of pounds of copper from American landfills and return this copper to China.
