The 2014 Waste Expo was held this past week in Atlanta. Thousands of waste management and recycling professionals meet to discuss topics ranging from workplace safety to innovations in equipment to recycling.

Here’s a list of 10 highlights for everyone who wasn’t able to make it…

The Lunch & Learn

On Monday, attendees were able to attend a “lunch and learn” session that focused on Occupational Health & Safety Administration safety tips, rules and regulations that waste management professionals need to worry about during the upcoming year.

The Waste Expo Investor Summit

Michael E. Hoffman, the managing director at Wunderlich Securities, headed a series of presentations on investing with several publically traded waste management and recycling companies.

The Keynote Address

The president of Cal Recovery Inc. Luis Diaz delivered this year’s keynote address over the history of organic management.

The Automation & Production Panel

Executives from some of the major equipment manufacturers such as Autocar, Mack Trucks, Environmental Solutions Group and Labrie Environquip discussed automation, adoption of compressed natural gas and the increased use of technology when it comes to monitoring trucks.

The EREF Auction

The Environmental Research & Educational Foundation held their annual live auction. Between the auction and their other events the company was able to raise more than $1 million!

CAT’s Landfill Compactor

CAT showed off their new Caterpillar 836K landfill compacter. The compacter has 562 gross horsepower, as well as an EPA Tier 4-Final emissions regulated engine.

CASE’s 621F Wheel Loader

CASE showed off their new CASE 621F wheel loader. The wheel loader contains new powertrain and Tier 4 SCR engine technology that offers up to 16% reduced fuel consumption per hour over their previous loaders.

Ford’s F-750

Ford showed off the 2016 version of their F-750. The truck can run on either gasoline or diesel and comes with either a 6.7 or 6.8 liter power stroke V8 turbo engine.

Steinert’s UniSort

Steinert’s UniSort system allows plastic to be recovered for recycling in a more efficient manner. The system can detect plastics as small as 4 mm that need to be recovered separated from waste for recycling.

Waste Management & U.S. Ecology Speakers

Eric Garrett, the CFO of U.S. Ecology, and Jeff Feller, the CEO, talked about the future of the company while president of WM Recycle America Bill Caeser and senior vice president of field operations John Morris spoke about the future of Waste Management.
