Today is the 14th national America Recycles Day. In honor of the holiday, we wanted to share some stats about how much America recycles…

  1. In 1960, 94% of trash ended up in landfills. Now, that number is down to 54%.
  2. 75% of our waste is recyclable, but we only recycle 30% of it.
  3. In 20 years, paper recycling increased by 90%!
  4. Only 25% of Americans admit they don’t recycle.
  5. The average American produces 4.5 pounds of trash per day, but only recycles 1.5 pounds of it!

As you can see we’ve made a lot of progress, but we’ve still got a long ways to go!

Austin Junk Hauling: Halloween Costume Made From Junk Calls Attention to Recycling

This “Death of a Mermaid” costume recently won an Etsy costume contest for best costume and has been garnering attention all over the web!

The artist wanted to create the costume to call attention to the problem of beach pollution and we have to admit, it’s been getting quite a bit of attention!

She created the costume from some old junk she had lying around including an old prom dress, some dye and paint, household items and yarn.

All of the household items in the piece are items that are frequently found polluting our oceans and beaches such as plastic drink rings, straws, Styrofoam, etc.

The mermaid’s sign drives home the message of the costume – “Warning: No Swimming Sewage in Water.”
